Short Note by Paul Griffiths
This was Davies's op. 1, and a very lusty, characterful new arrival on the musical scene. Written for trumpet in D, it has three short movements, of which the first is an Allegro ripping away from a fanfare motif that also opens the opera Taverner. Then comes a slow movement rising to a climax of great force, and finally another quick movement full of exciting gestures. |
