A girdle round the year in five minutes. In twelve clear, simple images George Mackay Brown's poem turns through the months of Orkney life, and as it turns so the modal music, for a modestly able school or amateur choir, moves it on its way, with images of matching lucidity.

Short Note II by Stephen Pruslin © 1996

A Hoy Calendar for the Choir of St. Edward's College, Liverpool, is a setting of Mackay Brown's picture of traditional life on the Orkney Island of Hoy from January to December. Davies's completion of the work on 3 January aptly symbolizes the time-cycle beginning anew in the present tense.
